Billy Vigar is one of the most exciting new players at Hastings United, having joined after being released from Arsenal’s academy. Vigar is a 20-year-old forward who was born not so far up the road in Worthing. In this article we look at his career so far, his style of play, and the next step in his career.
His career so far
Vigar already has a lot of experience under his belt having played 68 games for various clubs and teams.
He started his career at Arsenal youth before being promoted to their U18 and U21 teams. During his time with the U18s he scored four goals and picked up two assists in the U18 Premier league. Vigar was not getting much time on the pitch for the U21s, so he made a loan move to Derby U21s where he played 13 times in the Premier League 2 picking up one assist.
Upon his return from loan, it was decided he needed another loan, so he was sent back down to Sussex to play for Eastbourne Borough FC.
At the start of his loan in the 2021/22 season, he had multiple injuries problems which really impacted his initial playing time. When the 20-year-old recovered from his injuries he made 32 National League South appearances in which he scored two goals.
So far in his career he has scored six goals and provided three assists.
Once again, he returned to Arsenal, but the decision was made that he would not be signing a new contract with the Gunners.
This gave Hastings United the chance to swoop in and pick up the young talent on a free deal.
Position
Throughout his so far short career, Vigar has played in five different positions across the attack in the midfield.
He has made one appearance as a centre midfielder and three appearances as a right midfielder. Impressively, scoring one goal and providing one assist in those three games on the right of midfield.
The Worthing born youngster has also played a few games out on both wings.
However, Vigar has played most of his games -16- as a striker where he has scored two goals from.
Hastings fans could see a fantastic partnership form between Vigar and Hastings hero Davide Rodari.
The next step
Vigar has not had the best start to his footballing career with his injury problems and lack of game time, but there is still time for the ex-Arsenal youngster to show what he can do.
Hastings is a great club for him to prove himself.
If he can knuckle down and push on this season and develop in all aspects of his game, there is no reason why he cannot rise back up through the ranks.
There is clearly something there, but it is just about bringing it out and showcasing it.
Vigar has already scored his first goal for Hastings so the confidence should be flowing. I would not be surprised to see him scoring double figures this season…
